Surprises, Predictions
and Exploration!

February 3rd-9th, 2008
I just completed a glorious week of reading nothing but Harry Potter. I chose to read Books 1,5,6 and 7 again. When I say again, I do not mean for a second time. This is probably my eighth or ninth time reading them. Reading the books this time, I was aware of some concepts that I did not know before. I recently took a mythology class. We spent a lot of time learning about Norse mythology. I learned that J.K. Rowling used some concepts from Norse mythology all throughout the Harry Potter series. For example, the werewolf Fenrir is a villian from Norse mythology. The evilness of his character in mythology is mirrored in the Harry Potter books. Another author who greatly drew from Norse mythology is J.R.R Tolkien. The nine rings originated from Norse mythology. It is great to learn just how intricate the books are and that there are many, many elements that DONT make the children's books.

I just finished The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis, and wow! Before this, I had only read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Reading the first book has changed my whole perspective on the world of Narnia and Lewis as an author. I really wish I would have read this book first before the second. However, I am also just thankful that I now know how Narnia orginated. You can truly see religious connections with how Aslan sang Narnia into existance. The witch Jadis was very terrifying and she made me uncomfortable throughout the whole book! C.S. Lewis is amazingly talented.

Hurray and yay! I have found a new series that is really captivating and interesting. Since the release of the last Harry Potter book, I have been sludging through books and trying to find a new series for me to love. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is the most original book I've read in a very long time. But the most surprising part of this is that this is a fairly new series. I had lost all faith with modern authors and their ability to deliver a truly delicious story. I read Uglies very quickly and I cannot wait to read Pretties, the second book in the series.

I am currently in the middle of Pretties, the second book in the ugly series. I am liking this even more than the first. I always wanted a closer look into the pretty world. Especially through the eyes of Tally Youngblood. The character Zane is very likable and I like him better than David.

My sister has let me borrow a few books from her favorite author. His name is John Bellairs and he writes horror, mystery and gothic type books. I've always wanted to read them and I thought this was a great opportunity to do so. I just finished The Letter, The Witch and The Ring. I have to say that I got freaked out while reading it! The story line is amazing and I loved how it was set in the fifties. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
