Kevin Henkes is a person who set out to become an author and illustrator. In school and at home, he loved to draw.
His talent showed, and his parents and teachers praised him. This influenced him to pursue his goals. Eventually, Kevin Henkes grew up to be an author
and illustrator who is loved by many.
Pronounced (Henk-us),
Kevin Henkes was born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1960. He went to college in Madison, Wisconsin at the University
of Wisconsin. It was during his freshman year that he wrote his first
book. He traveled to New York to find a publisher. He found
one very quickly. Her name is Susan Hirschman. She is the editor in chief for Greenwillow’s Publishing and she has published
all of his books to date. Published in 1981, All Alone is Henkes first book.
All Alone is a book that celebrates the abilities that someone has when
they are alone. Your imagination is strong with endless possibilities. All the senses are alive in this story. This book is
special because it praises individuality and being unique.
As
time went on, Henkes found himself wanting to bring humor to his stories. The decision to use animals in his stories came
from the fact that they could add more humor to the stories than using humans could. Using animals allowed Henkes to stretch
his imagination even further when writing and illustrating. Kevin Henkes draws his inspiration for writing from his childhood memories. My all-time favorite Henkes
book is called Chrysanthemum. This book is about a young mouse who starts kindergarten
where she is teased about her name. The little mouse must overcome these obstacles and learn that being unique is what’s
important.
Kevin Henkes has also written
novels throughout his career as a writer. These titles include: Bird Lake
Moon, Sun & Spoon, Words of Stone, The
Zebra Wall, The Birthday Room, Two Under Par, Protecting Marie and the Newbery Honor
winner, Olive’s Ocean.
A great quote from Kevin Henkes himself, sums up what he thinks about his
writing and illustrating career.
"I used to live with my parents and brothers and sister
and work at a card table in my bedroom. Now I live with my wife and son and daughter in our own house and work at a drawing
table in my own studio. I never thought I'd be lucky enough to be a real author and illustrator. I wouldn't trade it for anything."
Kevin Henkes recently recieved the Caldecott Medal in 2005 for his picture
book, Kitten's First Full Moon.
